The Organ series are small watercolor works on paper that began as explorations of accumulated marks which coalesced into a sequence of abstract images containing a figure–ground relationship. The figure is an fleshy and knotted object that perhaps belongs in an interior or protected space, but that is instead exposed and floating free. The ground is a hatched pattern that both supports and grows out of the figure.
In the months leading up to the pandemic, I developed work that drew on my interest in open-ended, process- and materials-based approach to drawing and sculpture. I found I needed to balance the deterministic and cerebral approach of my more conceptual work with projects that allowed for spontaneity, improvisation, and plastic expression. This recent shift has allowed me to make work that I consider to be responsive to both a personal and generalized experience of the shrinking of daily life, the feeling of societal grief, and a quieting of the world.
